...that maybe we could use some more subjects to talk about here. Discussing the existence of "God" is nice, but we could use some more things to speak of.
How about...*thinks*...Capital Punishment (The Death Penalty)
Your opinions? Should it be legal? Does it violate the 8th Amendment (Cruel and unusaul punishments shall not be carried out, nor excessive bails and fines imposed)? Amy thoughts at all? We'd love to hear them.

ok so capital punishment is an interesting one (we studied this in detail for my RS lessons a few years ago btw..i’m not just a walking text book haha I just remember it).....lets start with the cons....i mean we don't have the death penalty in the UK anymore...so yeah I shall start with the cons....from the start tho…I’m against the death penalty
There are obviously a number of incontrovertible arguments against the death penalty.
The most important on, i think is the virtual certainty that genuinely innocent people will be executed and that there is no possible way of compensating them for this miscarriage of justice.
There is also another significant danger here. The person convicted of the murder may have actually killed the victim and may even admit having done so but does not agree that the killing was murder. Often the only people who know what really happened are the accused and the deceased. And with both dead, there’s never going to be an answer to that question
A second reason, that is often overlooked, is the hell the innocent (ok so yeah i went for innocent, but i guess also if they are guilty too) family and friends of criminals must also go through in the time leading up to and during the execution and which will often cause them serious trauma for years afterwards.... ESPECIALLY if their family member was innocent.
It is often very difficult for people to come to terms with the fact that their loved one could be guilty of a serious crime and no doubt even more difficult to come to terms with their death in this form. However strongly you may support capital punishment two wrongs do not make one right.....cliché I know...but if you are sentenced to death...does this not indirectly make you as bad as the person u are killing? One cannot and should not deny the suffering of the victim's family in a murder case but the suffering of the murderer's family is surely equally valid.
There is no such thing as a humane method of putting a person to death. Every form of execution causes the prisoner suffering, some methods perhaps cause less than others, not only the killing its self but the lead up to it. How would you feel knowing that you were going to die tomorrow morning at 8.00 a.m.? Surely life imprisonment is enough of a punishment?
Ok…the pros…I guess…here goes…
Ok so I guess most importantly Capital punishment permanently removes the worst criminals from society and should prove much cheaper and safer for the rest of us than long term or permanent imprisonment. It is self evident that dead criminals cannot commit any further crimes.
Execution is a very real punishment rather than some form of "oh lets imprison them for a few years” treatment, (I know tho that in American law, when people are given life, you guys mean it, were as in Britain life probably means like 25years)
But….. Does the death penalty deter? It is hard to prove one way or the other because in most countries the number of people actually executed per year is usually a very small proportion. It would however seem that in those countries which almost always carry out death sentences when it is given there is generally far less serious crime. However when the death penalty was abolished in the UK the murder rate more that doubled!
I’m personally against the death penalty due simple to the fact that, if found later that the accused was innocent, there is no way of reversing it, where as if they are just imprisoned. they can be released…that’s just me though…maybe I’ve been made to think that due to living in a county that doesn’t promote the death penalty as punishment…
x

I have wierd opinions about this one. Personally, I think it's a good thing for certain drimes, such as premeditated murder, mass murder, rape/murder, or anything else that would just be considered atrocious. Capital punishment can be an good deterrent, (unless our convict is suicidal) and should be used for certain crimes, depending on the severity. Personally, I think life is a thing not to be wasted, but if you end someone else's life, you should pay dearly. However, I think CP should only apply to those who actually think long and hard about thier act before they do it, or did it in some extremely painful and suffering-inducing way. Someone who just walks outside and shoots a random person should just get a life sentence. This doesn't make sense, and you're probly thinking "What side is he on!?, but it's really hard to explain my position on CP. If any of you are confused about anything, or just interested in hearing more about my point, go and IM me over MSN ( ), Yahoo . or AOL/AIM ( ) (Can you see my opinions on the different messengers?) I'm out, so yeah.

Death Penalty....
Is any killer worth more than his crime...
I believe that small sentance is the eaisest way to discribe my feelings on the subject. I am not fond of the death penalty, and in a way i believe anyone caught guilty of murder, and is indeed the guilty party is worth no more than that which they did.
Yet I also see that the person who is to carry out the murderers death sentance is also a murderer. Anyone who is caught playing the grim reaper is guilty of murder. So I have no say one way or the other I see all sides of it.

Yeah, I get that....I just think if you waste a life in a premeditated manner (read: with lots a of planning and things), then you shuold have yours taken. The only thing I can't settle on is where do you draw the line between life and death. (Points to anyone who gets the life and death bit.)

There's hundreds of people waiting on death row, that haven't even done a crime.

The death penalty is costing the US so much money each year, it's unbelievable.
